Roof openings have their own functions

A rooflight brings daylight into a building; a smoke and heat exhaust vent has additional duties within the relevant smoke-control design. Penetrations carry services or equipment through the roof. Each has connections and conditions that PV installation must not inadvertently change.

The FRISSBE/ZAG guideline considers roof geometry and fire pathways alongside the PV arrangement. Planning openings and access is therefore part of the overall concept. [1]

Determine clearances from the project

A clearance may be required for fire protection, smoke-vent operation, maintenance or fall protection. These reasons should not disappear into a single universal number. Mark the relevant requirements and their purpose on the roof plan.

Also consider the opening zone of moving components, cable routes and future replacement. A clear strip on a drawing has little value if ballast or equipment occupies it after installation. VdS 3145 provides an overarching framework for PV design and operation. [2]

Design mineral protection details for their task

At upstands, a suitable exterior board can form part of a protective detail. WEER addresses this application in addition to boards on the roof surface beneath PV. Roof waterproofing and its termination remain separate functions.

What matters is where the board ends, how it is fixed and how water drains. Testing a flat board does not automatically establish the performance of a complete rooflight or a complex penetration detail. For any building component, what counts is the matching construction detail.

Preserve access and maintainability

A roof opening must remain inspectable. Plan routes and safe working areas so that maintenance does not require the unplanned removal of large module arrays. This also applies to concealed connections and outlets behind protective boards.

Mark opening arcs, maintenance access and required clearances before laying out the PV field. Protective boards must not restrict smoke ventilation or drainage.
